In a recent development, the Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataha Museveni, has approved an extension of the deadline for the redevelopment works of Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

The new completion date has been pushed from August 1st, 2023, to November 30th, 2023. The decision was made following a comprehensive tour of the stadium on Monday, during which the minister assessed the progress of the redevelopment works.

The project’s main contractor, the UPDF Engineering Brigade, had requested an extension to incorporate critical upgrades to the stadium. Minister Museveni acknowledged the request and granted the extension, emphasizing the importance of the intervention efforts in ensuring the stadium meets modern standards.

“I have approved an extension for these intervention efforts, shifting the initial completion date to November 30th, 2023,” Minister Museveni announced in a lengthy tweet. She further stated, “This extension was granted upon the request of the project’s main contractor, the UPDF Engineering Brigade.”

During her visit, the minister expressed her satisfaction with the ongoing works, noting that they are progressing in accordance with FIFA’s standards. The redevelopment project includes various enhancements aimed at improving the stadium’s infrastructure.

Some of the key features being integrated into Namboole Stadium include a state-of-the-art ticketing and access control system, solar lighting installations to reduce utility costs, and the establishment of an efficient drainage and irrigation system. These upgrades are expected to enhance the overall fan experience while ensuring the stadium remains environmentally friendly and sustainable.

The extension of the completion deadline will allow the UPDF Engineering Brigade and other involved parties to carry out the necessary enhancements to the stadium, ensuring that all aspects are thoroughly addressed before its reopening. Once completed, Namboole Stadium is anticipated to become a world-class sporting facility, capable of hosting various local and international events.

The Minister of Education and Sports has expressed her confidence in the project’s progress and its potential to significantly contribute to the development of sports in the country. She emphasized the importance of providing athletes, sports enthusiasts, and the general public with modern and well-equipped facilities that meet international standards.

As November approaches, stakeholders eagerly await the completion of the redevelopment works at Namboole Stadium, anticipating a new era for sports and entertainment in Uganda.
