In a groundbreaking move, Express FC, Uganda’s oldest football club, has announced the establishment of its first-ever women’s football team, Express Women FC.
The team is set to compete in the Kampala regional Women’s league in the upcoming season, with a roster primarily comprised of students.
The decision to create Express Women FC was driven by a commitment to promoting women’s football and adhering to the regulations set forth by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), Confederation of African Football (CAF), and FIFA.
According to club chairman Suubi Kiwanuka, this initiative is a long-awaited opportunity for Express FC to venture into women’s football.
Express FC’s chairman expressed his enthusiasm for the newly formed women’s team, stating, “I’m excited about the Express Women’s football team because it is an opportunity for the club to venture into something it has wanted for a long time. We are following the FUFA, CAF, and FIFA regulations, so our fans should be excited because this will be handled well and with the support it deserves as we aim to promote women’s football.”
With the establishment of Express Women FC, Express FC becomes the second Uganda Premier League side to own a women’s football team, following in the footsteps of Maroons, who own She Maroons. Meanwhile, KCCA FC and Vipers have formed partnerships with Kampala Queens and Wakiso Hills Women’s sides, respectively, in order to meet the CAF regulations for teams participating in the CAF interclub competitions.
Express FC, a seven-time league champion, has faced financial challenges since lead sponsor Betway left the club and closed its operations in Uganda in 2022. However, the club remains determined to maintain its commitment to excellence. Recently, Express FC appointed Miiro Ashraf as its new CEO, replacing Isaac Mwesigwa, who moved to rivals S.C Villa. Miiro, a former referee who retired in 2018, previously served as the CEO of UPDF FC.
Notably, Express FC holds the distinction of being the defending champions of the CECAFA Kagame Cup, having emerged victorious in the 2021 edition of the prestigious tournament.
The launch of Express Women FC marks a significant milestone in Ugandan football, providing a platform for aspiring female players to showcase their skills and contribute to the growth and development of women’s football in the country. With the backing of the club and the support of fans, Express Women FC aims to make a lasting impact in the Kampala regional Women’s league and beyond.
